A 72 degree, sunny September day means one thing - get out there and soak up the rays while you can.
Winter's on the way.
It's a perfect day to take a quiet break on the beach where the only sounds come softly from gently lapping waves, the rustling of aspen leaves, a woodpecker's tapping, and the flapping of seagull wings.
A sole gull glided to a beach landing only 10 feet away from me as I lounged in a beach chair.
The gull came to forage for lunch at the waterfront cafe and seemed pleased with the menu -(they'll eat most anything) - as it moved from one morsel to another - pecking - devouring - then cleaning its bill in the bay water 'finger bowl' before going to the next thing on this vast buffet.
Off and on the gull rested between bites - stepping into the water on its toothpick legs, then floating.
For once, he had no competition. This gull lunched alone.
Suddenly as I watched, I felt a sneeze coming and tried to suppress it.
No luck with that. Surely the gull will fly away.
Not so!
Without hesitation - at Bay side buffet, he stayed.
